Reading Week #30 – Missing BST

11.07.2014 by Nicola //

Happy Wine

It’s November and here in Scotland we’ve already been propelled well into the Christmas season with red cups and TV ads and all other manner of basic bitch dross.

And I already miss BST. Can has light til after 4.45pm please?

The early darkness has given me some more time/incentive to read, though. So here ya go.

–– ON ROBOTNIC.CO ––

A new addition to The Essayist Project this week – And the Heart Says Whatever by Emily Gould

Another month, another set of books. Here are my October Reads – capsule reviews and a wee video to match.

–– ARTS & CULTURE ––

Jill Abramson startup to advance writers up to $100k for longform work. And made some comments on the pay gap.

“You read these in high school and the big question you ask is, Is Hamlet mad? Another big question to ask is, Is Hamlet an asshole?” Mallory Ortberg on the Great Jerks of Literature.

I loved this recent episode of You Must Remember This about Hollywood’s first not-exactly-sex-positive sex symbol, Theda Bara. Superb storytelling, as ever.

–– DIGITAL ––

A teenager chats to her techie dad about learning to code. An interesting and vital perspective, if a little leading on the dad’s part.

If you’re into the podcast Serial (which I mentioned last week) you might want to read the Daily Dot’s guide to Serial conspiracy theories. The last one is a scream.

–– ON PAPER ––

I’m reading Wild at the moment so this kind of resonated. But, y’know, do you see Nicholas Barber doing anything remotely active? (I actually have no idea… but I’m gonna go ahead and guess no.)

I’m also in the midst of reading Leslie Jamison’s excellent The Empathy Exams and a wee Penguin Great Ideas book of Jorge Luis Borges’ essays. I sense a book hangover coming on.

Got any book recommendations for me?

–– LADYBITS ––

I’m sick of powerful women who rely on self-deprecation and likeability to make people feel comfortable with their success. Modesty and niceness are overrated – and I don’t believe for a second that they are the traits of wildly successful women. Tell us how you really got there. I know it wasn’t just “taking a seat at the table” or because you stopped saying sorry.

Fuck yeah to Jessica Valenti on Amy Poehler’s new book, Yes, Please.

More Roxane Gay! Not sorry. Theses on the Feminist Novel.

–– &c. ––

Confessions of a selfie taker. “I take my selfies because I am that guy who, unless he takes the picture or suggests it, doesn’t get his picture taken.”

Reading Week #29 – Distinctly Unspooky

10.31.2014 by Nicola //

A distinctly unspooky but still pretty scary pumpkin. Thanks, internet.
A distinctly unspooky but still pretty scary pumpkin. Thanks, internet.

Happy Hallowe’en!

Worry not, there’s no kitschy spooky shit here.

I spent last weekend in London and much of the week working til dark, so here are a few Internet snippets and a handful of awesome podcasts links for you to enjoy.

–– ARTS & CULTURE ––

An Isaac Asimov essay on creativity has been unearthed and published for the first time. He asks, “How Do People Get New Ideas?”

The author of a One Direction fan fiction that got 1 BILLION hits on Wattpad got a 3-book deal and a movie deal. Not bad, eh?

Race the Tube: Glasgow Style. Nevermind the guy that beat the Clockwork Orange from Buchanan Street to St Enoch Square (a 58-second ride); this dude has the right idea. (Okay spoiler alert it’s a Tennant’s ad. Clever, but.)

–– DIGITAL ––

It’s been a podcasty week, so it has.

Maria Popova on the Tim Ferriss podcast. He’s kind of a blowhard but I’ll deal for the nerdy work process chat.

Mallory Ortberg on Reading Lives. She reads in the shower?!

Conor Friedersdorf of The Atlantic also has some tips for binge podcast listening.

Serial is quickly becoming one of my most anticipated podcasts each week. (Mine and everyone else’s.) Although I have to agree with this point…

The problem with Serial is the guy sounds perfectly content to hang in jail so the stakes are low, low, low.

— Jessica Stanley (@dailydoseofjess) October 27, 2014

–– ON PAPER ––

This week I finished reading Under the Skin for tonight’s book club. And oh, how it deserves a faithful adaptation. It has themes and character development and everything! I may even get around to his new book soon.

Also, please make this happen.

Who will pay me to edit "Best Internet-Era Nonfiction 2004-2014," an anthology feat. digital & print work? I pledge to include a token man.

–– &c. ––

An uncomfortable read about the trial of skinniness in the New Inquiry: You’re Right, I Didn’t Eat That.

Canadian radio journalist Jian Ghomeshi has had some serious allegations brought against him this week. I’ve enjoyed his work on Q for some time. Now 8 or 9 women have come forward. One of his friends was pretty blunt about it, saying: “Jian Ghomeshi is my friend, and Jian Ghomeshi beats women”.

Reading Week #28 – Running For Your Life (From Shia LeBeouf)

10.24.2014 by Nicola //

So jealous of this guy.

Welcome to Reading Week #28!

If you’re reading this by email I’m a little late today. Sorry! I had a little bit too much fun last night.

I’m off to London this weekend to visit friends and attend a work-related thing on Monday. What are you up to?

–– ON ROBOTNIC.CO ––

The Essayist Project finally kicked off proper with my thoughts on Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay.

An overdue video, my July to September Reading Wrap-Up. “Pithy” short reviews of the 19 books I read in that time.

Another video, this time On Reading Diversely.

–– ARTS & CULTURE ––

Why Douchebag is the Racial Slur We’ve All Been Waiting For by Michael Mark Cohen. See also: why we need more academics writing accessible, funny pieces on topics like this one.

I’ve spotted one or two “Emotional Support Animals” around airports recently. The worry is that the many will ruin it for the few. New Yorker writer Patricia Marx took it to the level of farce in this great piece: How to Take Your Pet Anywhere.

I’m a Black Journalist. I’m Quitting Because I’m Tired of Newsroom Racism. Says Rebecca Carroll in the New Republic, a publication that doesn’t have the best reputation for diversity.

–– DIGITAL ––

“Shia LaBeouf” Live – Rob Cantor

The funniest viral video I’ve seen in years. Those production values tho!

An author thinks she’s being catfished. A blogger explains why her actions were threatening. Can we just not publish these things anymore, please? Thanks.

We must stop praying to our iPhones: Dissent and critical thinking in the Internet era. This guy has some strange arguments.

–– ON PAPER ––

As you can probably tell from the above, it’s been a slow reading week for me.

I’m currently reading Confusion by Stefan Zweig and Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham.
